Vicky Donor

Infertility awareness is rising in India thanks to Bollywood film, Vicky Donor. This romantic comedy won several national awards and brought the topic of male fertility to the mainstream. The basic plot is that a fertility clinic is struggling to improve success rates and needs higher quality sperm. The doctor seeks out Vicky, a young, fertile man to help out. The doctor works hard to convince to Vicky to donate. Meanwhile, Vicky falls in love and has to navigate his new relationship and decisions about donating sperm.

Male infertility is a growing issue around the world, including in India. Traditionally infertility is seen as a woman’s issue. Films like this help to knock down stereotypes, empower couples to get to the root cause of fertility issues, create support mechanisms for men and reduce the weight on women. The film has had widespread viewing in India and has helped to start a dialog about fertility. Kudos to the producer and the actors for doing such a great job with a sensitive and often taboo subject.
